New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
